CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE PRESIDENT CHRISTINE DUFFY DELIVERS COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS FOR UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON HOSPITALITY SCHOOL GRADUATES

Duffy: Future Hospitality Leaders Must Innovate, Improve Society, Protect Natural Resources and Create More Inclusive Workplaces

HOUSTON, May 12, 2023 – Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy delivered the 2023 spring commencement address to graduates of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership at the University of Houston today. In underscoring the growing importance of hospitality in the global economy, Duffy stressed to graduates the importance of thinking about the future of travel and hospitality in the same regard as the future of medicine, technology, aerospace and transportation infrastructure. To read the full transcript of Duffy’s address, click here.

“It is an honor to congratulate this hardworking group of graduates and to welcome them, our future leaders, into the travel and hospitality industry as they embark on the next important steps in their lives and careers,” said Duffy. “The impact of travel and tourism goes beyond cruises and hotels and theme parks. Our industry generates tens of billions of dollars of economic activity and innovation every year across technology, sustainable energy, food security and water conservation, and construction practices. It’s a big responsibility, but after talking with the students here in Houston today, my optimism for a bright future is as strong as ever.”

In the address, Duffy reminded graduates they are entering a noble profession – underscoring the different ways the travel and hospitality industry makes a difference in people’s lives. Duffy’s speech stressed the economic importance of the industry, highlighting its potential to positively affect communities big and small. Duffy also emphasized the industry’s role in bringing together friends and families and helping to create memories and experiences that last a lifetime.

“Remember, no matter what part of the industry you choose, your work contributes to what are often the most memorable moments in people’s lives which is why as an industry we must stay diligent and focused on educating policy makers on the importance of travel,” she told the graduates. “We have a responsibility to lead beyond our own business and to set an example for other sectors in how we must innovate, improve society, protect natural resources and create a workplace that is diverse and inclusive.”

Duffy also told graduates about her own journey to become the first woman president of Carnival Cruise Line, the flagship brand of the world’s largest travel leisure company Carnival Corporation. Before she led the cruise line’s 40,000 employees across its 25-ship fleet, she was the president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents the $120 billion global cruise industry. Prior to CLIA, she spent 10 years at Maritz Travel Company, the world’s largest corporate meeting, events and incentive travel company. Her career in the travel and tourism industry started four decades ago, when she began working as a travel agent in Philadelphia. Now, she is widely recognized as an industry leader and earlier this year, she was re-appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. From 2020 to 2022, she served as the National Chair of the U.S. Travel Association.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE SPOTLIGHTS TEAM MEMBERS PUTTING THE ‘FAMILY’ IN ‘FAMILY FUN’ FOR MOTHER’S DAY

Mother-Daughter and Mother-Son Duos Reflect on Family Bonds and Ship Life

MIAMI, May 11, 2023 – At Carnival Cruise Line this Mother’s Day, two Carnival moms who share a special bond with their children as part of the shipboard team are sharing about motherhood as well as working and living at sea.

The two profiles that follow feature mother-daughter and mother-son pairs working on different ships across the Carnival fleet while serving the same mission of helping to provide fun and memorable vacations for families every day.

Madelein Marais and Charnè

Madelein Marais and her daughter Charnè are from South Africa. Madelein works in guest services on Carnival Valor, and Charnè works in human resources on Carnival Magic.

  • What does it mean to you to have your daughter also working at Carnival?

Madelein: It’s a privilege, and I'm thankful every time I hear nice compliments about her and how well she is doing. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Charnè on Carnival Dream and could see first-hand how she adapted to ship life and blossomed as a person. It is also so valuable to have her to talk to about ship life; she understands everything I'm talking about – even our special ship language.

  • Why did you decide to follow in your mom’s footsteps and work at Carnival?

Charnè: Every time we spoke, she would talk about how happy she is and how amazing the places she’s visiting are; she also spoke about how great Carnival is and that it truly feels like a family on board. I was finishing my degree and knew I wanted to travel the world and start building a new career, so Carnival seemed like the perfect place for me.

  • What’s your favorite Mother’s Day memory?

Madelein: Last year, she took me for a Mother's Day weekend while we were on vacation in South Africa. We did a wine tour together and talked and laughed as if the rest of the world didn't exist.

Charnè: I surprised her with a weekend away in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, and we visited some of the best wine farms; it was a great way to spend some time together and show her how much I appreciate her.

Loreta Torres and Psalm

Loreta Torres and her son Psalm are from the Philippines. Loreta works in guest services on Mardi Gras, and Psalm works as a healthcare assistant on Carnival Dream.

  • Why did you decide to follow in your mom’s footsteps and work at Carnival?

Psalm: Carnival made a great impact on our lives. With the help of Carnival, I was able to graduate with my bachelor’s degree, and now I am a registered medical technologist. I saw and felt how the company has taken care of my mom and treated her not just as an employee but as part of the family as well.

  • How do you stay in touch?

Loreta: We are always chatting. We call each other often, and luckily, once a month, we see each other when we’re in the same port.

Psalm: Thankfully the company provides a free chat service to stay in touch with family and friends. Also, whenever our ships meet, we can enjoy quality time together.

  • What’s your best Mother’s Day memory?

Loreta: He would always serenade me with his guitar and a meaningful song.

  • How will you celebrate Mother’s Day this year?

Loreta: Usually, we celebrate with dinner at our favorite restaurant together with his siblings, or if I was on board, they would buy a cake and show it to me on a video call.

Psalm: I usually send her a greeting message with a photo of me and our dog.

Carnival’s onboard teams will help families celebrate this upcoming Mother's Day by hosting appreciation events fleetwide. Guests on board this weekend may also choose from a variety of Mother's Day-themed activities, from a Famous Mom's Trivia game to special craft-making.

Carnival Cruise Line and Port of Seattle Welcome Carnival Luminosa as Ship Embarks Guests from U.S. for First Time

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

Carnival Cruise Line and Port of Seattle Welcome Carnival Luminosa as Ship Embarks Guests from U.S. for First Time

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy welcomed the first guests to board Carnival Luminosa from a U.S. port in Seattle today. The ship arrived at the Port of Seattle after a 23-day transpacific journey that began in Brisbane, Australia to begin a series of sailings to Alaska.

Carnival Luminosa is Carnival’s third ship sailing to Alaska this season and part of a deployment that will see 100,000 guests visit spectacular destinations that include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as Victoria, B.C., and the cruising of Tracy Arm Fjord. Carnival has seen an extraordinary response for its upcoming Alaska cruises, so to welcome guests and help kick off the season, Duffy held a special event at the Port of Seattle’s Pier 91 cruise terminal.

“Not only is Carnival Luminosa completing our Alaska deployment for this season, which was so successful last year after we expanded it to three ships that we decided to bring her all the way from Australia to do it again, but she’s also front and center in another important effort for us as well,” Duffy said. “Work starts today on getting Carnival Luminosa shore power ready so she can hook up to the port when she’s docked here in Seattle. Shore power is one of our overall sustainability initiatives and Carnival Luminosa is now part of that important investment in our future.”

Carnival expects the ship will be ready to plug in and operate on electric power while at the port of Seattle by early June. Once the work is complete, Carnival Luminosa will join her sister ships also deployed to Alaska this season that are already utilizing shore power – Carnival Spirit, which is also homeporting in Seattle, and Carnival Miracle, homeporting in San Francisco.

Carnival Luminosa is one of Carnival’s latest additions to the fleet, having joined the Carnival fleet in November of 2022 from a Carnival Corporation sister line, the ship underwent a series of refurbishments and began homeporting in Brisbane, Australia. Now, after the first-time cruising through U.S. waters, the ship is embarking guests in Seattle who will be some of the first from America to see and experience it. Retaining much of its beautiful European styling, the ship boasts a unique aesthetic and some exclusive features, such as a Cloud 9 Spa spanning two decks with one of the fleet’s most expansive thermal areas. Much like her sisters, the ship also features many guest-favorite Carnival venues, including Alchemy BarFahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and RedFrog Rum BarPiano Bar 88 and The Punchliner Comedy Club.

Next year, between two transpacific cruises that feature visits to Japan and Hawaii, Carnival Luminosa will again join Carnival Spirit to homeport in Seattle, operating seven-, eight- and 14-day sailings, and Carnival Miracle will return to San Francisco , where 10- and 11-day cruises are available. BOLT will soar above other popular attractions designed for fun for all ages, including WaterWorks aqua park and SportSquare featuring a mini-golf course, full-court basketball and an exhilarating ropes course.

  • Summer Landing – Beyond The Shores zone, Summer Landing will continue Deck 8’s relaxed vibe and bring together some of Carnival guests’ favorites. This area is home to Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, which offers smoked-onboard favorites created by longtime Carnival partner, celebrity chef and restaurateur Guy Fieri and an assortment of Carnival’s ParchedPig craft beers from the onboard brewery. Other popular venues include the Heroes Tribute Lounge, honoring military personnel, as well The Patio – which features a pool and whirlpools – and The Watering Hole poolside bar.

  • Lido – The poolside zone, which spans Decks 16 and 17, is home to the Carnival Seaside Theater, two-story RedFrog Tiki Bar, BlueIguana Cantina and guest-favorite Guy’s Burger Joint. CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE GETS READY FOR BUSY ALASKA SEASON

Carnival Luminosa to Sail from U.S. for First Time, Joining Three-Ship Deployment

MIAMI, April 6, 2023 – Building on the success of its 2022 Alaska season, Carnival Cruise Line is gearing up to launch another three-ship deployment that will sail 49 Alaskan cruises this year. This season, Carnival is introducing new experiences to its popular array of shore excursions and preparing to welcome one of its newest additions to the fleet, Carnival Luminosa, into U.S. waters for the first time.

Carnival Miracle will kick off Carnival’s Alaska season on April 23, 2023, from Long Beach, Calif. for a 14-day journey and will then operate from her seasonal homeport of San Francisco, Calif. with 10-day cruises that feature visits to Prince Rupert, B.C., a new destination this season. In Seattle, Wash., Carnival Spirit’s first departure is set for May 2, 2023, and then Carnival Luminosa joins to complete the season’s start on May 4, 2023. Carnival will operate six-, seven- and eight-day sailings from the Port of Seattle. Destinations during these voyages include the popular ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as Victoria, B.C., and cruising Tracy Arm Fjord.

Ahead of her arrival in Seattle, Carnival Luminosa will take guests on a 23-day Carnival Journeys cruise from Brisbane, Australia, where she has been homeporting since joining the fleet in November 2022. Guests sailing on Carnival Luminosa from Seattle will experience many unique features the ship brings to the Carnival fleet, such as a Cloud 9 Spa spanning two decks with one of the fleet’s most expansive thermal areas. After joining from sister-brand Costa Cruises last year, the ship underwent several enhancements. Like her sisters Carnival Spirit and Carnival Miracle, the ship also features a sky dome over the pool deck, allowing the area to be enjoyed no matter the weather.

“I can’t wait to welcome our guests on board our stunning Carnival Luminosa, as she joins her beautiful sisters, Carnival Spirit and Carnival Miracle, for this year’s Alaska season. There’s no better way to see the awe-inspiring natural wonder of Alaska than by cruise ship, and we anticipate making that happen for more than 100,000 guests this year,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “This season’s start is a good reminder that it’s not too early to plan for next year.”

Carnival has seen an extraordinary response for the upcoming season, and Alaskan sailings for next year are currently open for sale as well. In 2024, in between two spectacular transpacific cruises that feature visits to Japan and Hawaii, Carnival Luminosa will again join Carnival Spirit to homeport in Seattle, operating seven-, eight- and 14-day sailings, and Carnival Miracle will return to San Francisco, Calif., where 10- and 11-day cruises are available. The three ships will sail 53 cruises during the 2024 season, which will make it Carnival’s largest-ever Alaska deployment. To see Alaska cruises currently open for sale, visit Carnival.com.

Pack a Sense of Adventure and Be Immersed in Alaska’s Beauty
Each destination across every Alaskan itinerary offers several opportunities for guests to experience breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and deep history found on shore. From whale watching in Juneau to ziplining in Skagway, Carnival curates the best local experiences so guests can easily choose the perfect excursion. This season, Carnival is introducing two new excursions for Carnival Miracle cruises visiting Prince Rupert, B.C., which include:

  • Khutzeymatten Grizzly Bear Expedition: Guests will board a 72-foot catamaran designed for wildlife viewing for a full-day adventure through towering cliffs, dense forests and a thriving estuary ecosystem. They will gently glide through Canada’s only grizzly bear sanctuary, which is home to more than 50 grizzly bears, for an excellent chance at sightings.

  • Exchamsiks Exploration: Guests will experience the beauty of British Columbia's temperate rainforest and bountiful rivers by jet boat as well as on foot and enjoy a meal of fresh wild local salmon cooked over a campfire and served beneath 4,000-foot cliffs.

The new excursions join a wide range of offerings guests enjoy while visiting popular Alaskan ports, including:

  • Juneau: Sailing on an Alaskan-built, high-speed expedition vessel, the Mendenhall Glacier and Wildlife Quest offers an incomparable opportunity to see humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, porpoises, seals, eagles and a guided tour through the famous Mendenhall Glacier.

  • Skagway: The Ultimate Yukon and White Pass Railroad Adventure takes guests aboard a motor coach to marvel at the picturesque Yukon River, its adjoining chain of lakes and the rustic town of Caribou as they hear tales of the Klondike Gold Rush narrated by their guide.

  • Ketchikan: See – and taste – much of what makes Alaska unique at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, Crab Feast and Drinks, which offers guests a chance to watch Alaskan lumberjacks compete. A sightseeing tour and a Dungeness crab dinner follows while guests enjoy the dramatic mountain, forest and coastal scenery surrounding them.

Bring More Fun to The Last Frontier and Join Special Activities for Kids and Families
Carnival cruises to Alaska feature Alaska-specific programming geared toward children and families. From the Great Alaskan Deck Party to a digital scavenger hunt that helps guests of all ages collect snapshots of the best sights along their cruise, Carnival offers something for all age groups designed to enhance connection and engagement with the momentous experience of an Alaskan sailing. Some of the fun activities and memorable learning opportunities created specifically for voyages to Alaska include:

  • Wildlife, Nature and Culture: Local naturalists visit Camp Ocean to give an overview of Alaskan wildlife. In Club O2 and Circle C, teens will learn how best to photograph beautiful Alaskan scenery and have their questions about native wildlife answered by experts. Additionally, kids and teens can learn to square dance and express their creative side with crafts.

  • Family Ice Fishing Challenge: Everyone in the family can imagine life as an ice fisher – but instead of trout, each team fishes for points in a game that’s fun for all ages.

  • Family Lumberjack Challenge: Guests can join a fun competition to find out who in their family might make the best lumberjack.

Each of the three ships deployed to Alaska this season carry approximately 2,200 guests and feature many guest-favorite Carnival venues, including Alchemy Bar, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and RedFrog Rum Bar. Guests will also enjoy entertainment offerings that include Playlist Productions, Piano Bar 88 and The Punchliner Comedy Club.

THERE’S A NEW TEQUILA ON DECK! CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE NOW OFFERING GUY FIERI AND SAMMY HAGAR’S PREMIUM SANTO TEQUILA FLEETWIDE

MIAMI, Feb. 22, 2023 – Longtime Carnival partner, celebrity chef and restaurateur Guy Fieri – along with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar – is now expanding his offerings across the Carnival Cruise Line fleet with the introduction of Guy and Sammy’s premium Santo Tequilas.

In time for National Margarita Day today, Carnival announced that guests now sailing with the line can enjoy the sinfully smooth old world-style Santo Blanco Tequila and the ultimate oak-aged Santo Reposado Tequila at every bar on every ship. And on all ships with Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, guests can sip on Guy Fieri’s Caliente Margarita made with Santo Blanco Tequila, triple sec, cilantro, jalapeno, lemonade, and lime.

“When Sammy Hagar and I partnered up to bring our real deal, 100% Blue Weber Agave Santo to the tequila loving masses, we worked hard to make it available coast to coast,” said Fieri. “But something just seemed to be missing…Santo at sea! So, we joined forces with my longtime partners at Carnival Cruise Line to bring our old world-style Blanco and Reposado tequilas to every ship in the fleet. Stop by any Carnival bar or my Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse to check it out!"

Santo Tequila joins Guy’s already-popular dining options on board Carnival ships, including Guy’s Burger Joint which launched in 2011 and is featured on all of Carnival’s 24 ships serving up the most popular burgers at sea. Select Carnival ships also feature Guy’s Pig & Anchor offering smoked-on-board barbecue favorites and sides, as well as Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse serving craft beer brewed on board.

CARNIVAL LUMINOSA ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA

First Carnival Ship to be Homeported in Brisbane
Kicks Off Line’s Period of Growth

MIAMI, Oct. 31, 2022 – Carnival Luminosa officially arrived in Queensland, Australia, yesterday, marking the first ship from the fleet to be homeported in Brisbane.

Carnival Luminosa, which docked at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal with a special “We Love Queensland” message to locals, will set sail on her first cruise on Nov. 6 and operate 28 sailings through April 13, 2023, visiting 60 ports of call across Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific including Airlie Beach and The Great Barrier Reef. These sailings will support Carnival Australia’s anticipated $165 million contribution to the Queensland economy this year.

Including Luminosa, Carnival is adding five beautiful new ships to its fleet over the next two years in a period of growth. Next in the lineup of exciting additions is the delivery of not one but two Excel-class ships – Carnival Celebration to Miami in late November and Carnival Jubilee to Galveston, Texas, next year.

As part of this growth plan, Carnival will also introduce a new concept, “Carnival Fun Italian Style” with two additional ships from sister brand Costa Cruises – starting with Carnival Venezia joining next spring and sailing year-round from New York City and Carnival Firenze in 2024 sailing from Long Beach and adding to Carnival’s strong presence on the West Coast.

“Carnival Luminosa is a testament to our ongoing commitment to Australia, and the start of a period of growth unlike any other in Carnival’s 50-year history,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Having a Brisbane-based ship has been a goal of ours for quite some time, so we are so happy that they are the first market globally to experience the big, bright, fun that this ship has to offer and so excited to give our guests more Carnival ships and itinerary options to sail over the next two years.”

Carnival Luminosa joined the fleet on Sept. 8 and underwent enhancements over the last two months including the addition of Carnival’s signature red, white and blue hull livery as well as guest favorites from other Carnival ships. Following her time in Brisbane, Carnival Luminosa will reposition for seasonal service from Seattle to Alaska next May, before returning to Queensland later in the year.

CARNIVAL CONQUEST DEBUTS FIRST DEDICATED PICKLEBALL COURT IN CARNIVAL FLEET

Pickleball Player

MIAMI – Pickleball is one of America’s fastest-growing sports, and now it has a special place on board America’s Cruise Line, with Carnival Conquest debuting the first dedicated pickleball court in the Carnival fleet.

Carnival Conquest’s team members were the first to test out the new pickleball court that was added during its recent dry dock. The new court is located on the ship’s top deck, so picklers can enjoy the fun of their favorite game and take in beautiful ocean views all at once.
Pickleball is a two- or four-person sport where players hit a perforated hollow ball over a net using solid-faced paddles, combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The game has existed for decades, but it has seen surging popularity across the U.S. recently and growing interest internationally as well.

While Carnival Conquest has become the first Carnival ship to feature a permanent pickleball court, the game can be played on board several other ships across the Carnival fleet as well – with equipment recently added to most ships featuring basketball courts, where the game can be played.

Pickleball joins several other popular activities as part of Carnival SportSquare, which includes facilities for games such as mini golf, volleyball and basketball. For more about onboard activities, click here.

When Carnival Cruise Line guests start sailing on Carnival Luminosa, they will find an array of special features that make the ship unique to the fleet.

Only found on Carnival Luminosa and serving as the centerpiece of the 10-deck-high atrium is a particularly monumental bronze sculpture titled “Reclining Woman 2004” that was specially commissioned for this ship from world-renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The multi-million-dollar sculpture, more than 11 feet in length and weighing nearly one ton, depicts a female figure, daydreaming in a reclining position with a subtle and ironic facial expression. She serves as a good luck charm to the ship, her crew and guests.

Other unique features include a two-deck-high sliding sky dome over the ship’s large pool deck, allowing the area to be used in all types of weather; a collection of 120 Murano glass light fixtures and chandeliers; and a sunset deck bar perfect for enjoying a drink in an enchanting atmosphere. “While Carnival Luminosa will feel like a Carnival ship through and through with our signature service and offerings, the ship will offer her own unique features that our guests are going to love,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival Luminosa will serve as the first Carnival ship to be homeported in Brisbane, Australia with a variety of itineraries beginning on Nov. 6, 2022 and running through April 13, 2023. ACTRESS CASSIDY GIFFORD NAMED GODMOTHER OF CARNIVAL CELEBRATION

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up to be an insider

Continuing a family tradition, Gifford is the daughter of Kathie Lee Gifford who served as Godmother for the Original Carnival Celebration

MIAMI – September 28, 2022 – Carnival Cruise Line today announced that actress Cassidy Gifford will serve as godmother to its newest ship, Carnival Celebration, at the ship’s naming ceremony taking place November 20, 2022, in Miami.

In a video released today, she was surprised with the news by her mother Kathie Lee Gifford, who was Godmother to Carnival Celebration’s namesake, M/S Celebration, christened in 1987. Her mother served as Carnival’s spokesperson in the company’s groundbreaking television campaigns going back to the 1980s, which were the first such network broadcasting advertisements for the cruise industry.  Kathie Lee is also a four-time Emmy Award-winning television personality.

Cassidy first started sailing on Carnival as an infant and has many childhood memories of vacationing on Carnival ships with her mother and her father, the late Frank Gifford, who was an NFL and sports broadcasting legend.

“Carnival Cruise Line has been a huge part of our family with my earliest memories taking family trips on Carnival ships,” said Cassidy Gifford. “And now to be asked to be Godmother of the namesake ship to the one my mom christened is truly an honor and a blessing.  There was no hesitation when my mom asked me, and I can’t wait to see this amazing ship in Miami in November.”

“I was Carnival’s spokesperson for nearly 20 years starting in 1984, a time when I got married and had my children.  They joined me on many television shoots on Carnival ships, so we have so many great memories,” said Kathie Lee Gifford. “To be able to pass the torch to my daughter Cassidy as she is named Godmother of the new Carnival Celebration makes me so happy, I almost cried!”

Cassidy has been acting from a young age and is best known for her work in the box office hits God’s Not Dead and Warner Brothers’ The Gallows. She has appeared in many other television and film roles, even winning the prize for Exceptional Emerging Artist at the 2018 Hollywood Film Festival. She currently lives with her husband in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Since our founding in 1972, Carnival Cruise Line has carried generations of guests and has helped millions of families make lasting vacation memories,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “As we cap off our 50th Birthday festivities with the arrival of Carnival Celebration, we are so pleased to also extend our relationship with another generation of the Gifford family and honored that Cassidy will serve as the ship’s Godmother.  I can’t wait to welcome Cassidy and Kathie Lee on board and show off this beautiful new ship.  So much has changed in our industry and our company over the past 50 years – it gives new meaning to those words Kathie Lee sang for Carnival – ‘if they could see us now!’”

Celebrating all things Carnival, Carnival Celebration will be the line’s ultimate 50th Birthday gift when she debuts this November from the redesigned Terminal F at PortMiami. Carnival Celebration will be home to six themed zones and the line’s second BOLT roller coaster.

“We’ve done many maneuvering tests, such as endurance tests, steering tests, speed tests and thrusters tests. The ship performed wonderfully . . .”

MIAMI – Sept.14, 2022 – Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Celebration, is one more milestone closer to her highly-anticipated debut in her homeport of PortMiami after successfully completing sea trials in the Baltic Sea.

Carnival Celebration set sail on her first round of sea trials Monday, September 5, from Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the same shipyard where Celebration’s sister ship, Mardi Gras, was built. Carnival Celebration had a full contingent of officers, technicians and engineers on board to thoroughly test the ship’s technical, mechanical and navigational systems.

“During her sea trials, Carnival Celebration underwent several tests, which are meant to determine the ship’s capability and her performance. We’ve done many maneuvering tests, such as endurance tests, steering tests, speed tests and thrusters tests. The ship performed wonderfully, and shortly, we will get her out and start cruising,” said Capt. Vincenzo Alcaras.

Carnival Celebration’s arrival to Miami will continue the cruise line’s 50th birthday celebration. The ship will feature several unique zones, including 820 Biscayne – a tribute to Miami, where Carnival Cruise Line was born, showcasing styles and flavors of the 305.

Celebration will also include many of the features that made Mardi Gras one of the most anticipated cruise ships, including BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster, the first roller coaster at sea, an atrium spanning three decks and guest-favorites like Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse, and Shaquille O’Neal’s Big Chicken restaurant.

Following an inaugural 6-day voyage to the Eastern Caribbean, Carnival Celebration will launch year-round, seven-day cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from PortMiami beginning Nov. 21. The week-long voyages will visit destinations like San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cozumel, Mexico and Grand Turk.

By day, guests will be entertained with relaxing scenes like a sunny sky, but by night, the zone will take varying nightly themes, transporting guests to far-off places throughout the world. Some of the theme nights will include Abroad in Europe, Far East Voyage and Mexico Lindo.

“The Gateway was created to celebrate the enriching experience we all feel when traveling – not only because of the destinations we travel to, but also the world of cultures we get to explore,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We have millions of guests and team members who come from around the world to have fun together and create a welcoming and inclusive environment while sailing to new places – that is the beauty of traveling, especially on a Carnival ship, and that is what this zone will celebrate.”

The zone’s offerings will support the night’s theme – from the music played, to the drinks and food served, and the entertainment activations offered. For example, on Mexico Lindo night, while the window displays and surrounding technology may take guests on a journey through ancient Mayan cities, beautiful beaches, lush jungles, or magical towns, guests will enjoy themed offerings like special margaritas, palomas and agave tastings, accompanied by a specialty food item tied to the evening’s theme. Or for Exploring South America night, as sunset views over the Amazon and Machu Picchu or a moon-lit Rio de Janeiro sweep the scenes, a fun Brazilian celebration will get everyone on their feet while they sip on a Caipirinha or a Chilcano and indulge in a themed bite.

“When designing this innovative and transformative environment, we wanted to make sure that there was something new and exciting to see and experience every time a guest walks through the zone between day and night, and from day to day,” said Ben Clement, senior vice president of new builds, refurbishment and product innovation. “We also wanted to ensure that the entire promenade in The Gateway was connected and that the upper level was engaged with what is happening below.”

The Gateway’s main promenade will be home to a new travel-inspired bar concept, Latitudes. Latitudes will be reminiscent of a classic airport or train station with travel-themed chairs, menus and a mechanical split-flap display board, a modern take on the classic “departures” board that is being custom built by Oat Foundry in Philadelphia. Uniquely designed to come to life periodically with motion and sounds, including the familiar clack clack sound that sparks memories of past travels, the board will change to display the bar’s daily menu offerings and will include messages to support the imagery on the surrounding virtual windows. Offerings will include cocktails, spirits and wines from destinations around the world as well as special tastings and samplers.

Every evening, guests will enjoy a new Celebration Happy Hour event at Latitudes that will be hosted by the entertainment team and serve as an opportunity to celebrate special occasions and milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries and more.

Bringing the best from Mardi Gras to Carnival Celebration, The Gateway will also include the second seagoing restaurant by world-renowned chef and restaurateur Emeril Lagasse, Emeril’s Bistro 1397, but this time, with a twist – and we’re not just talking about the new name of the venue to represent this ship’s hull number. The menu will not only feature guest-favorites from Mardi Gras but will also offer the best of international cuisines and flavors presented with a special Carnival flair for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant will boast seating along the promenade’s walkway as well as a dedicated and more intimate dining area with ocean views.

The Gateway will also feature a large digital map display showcasing the locations of Carnival’s ships around the world in real time. The zone will be home to the recently revealed bar and lounge, The Golden Jubilee, as well, which ties into the zone’s theme of travel, celebrating Carnival’s 50 years of fun and the line’s Fun Ships that have served as their own destinations and as a means to travel around the world for the past five decades.

The ship’s main dining rooms adjacent to The Gateway will pay homage to Carnival’s history, with the forward Carnivale Restaurant, named after Carnival’s second ship, and the aft Festivale Restaurant, named after Carnival’s third ship.

Adjacent are also guest favorites including the cocktail pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Carnival Kitchen, and Limelight Lounge.

The Gateway is the final zone aboard Carnival Celebration, joining 820 Biscayne, Celebration Central, The Ultimate Playground, Summer Landing, and Lido zones.

Carnival Celebration will be the second Carnival ship to be powered by a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) propulsion system, part of Carnival Corporation’s green cruising platform, and will include BOLT, the award-winning roller coaster at the top of the ship. Carnival Celebration will debut in November from the redesigned state-of-the-art Terminal F at PortMiami, the line’s third terminal at the port and its largest in South Florida. The terminal will be among the first to be shore-power ready in 2023.

Additional details on Carnival Celebration will be revealed in the coming months leading up to the ship’s inaugural sailing from Miami on Nov. 21.

Software Helps Guide Guests with Food Allergies

Extensive dining options help feed the fun at Carnival Cruise Line, and as anyone with food allergies knows, having a variety of healthy choices is more than just enjoyable – but also important to safety. That’s why Carnival is now introducing the Menu Mate™ food ingredient program fleetwide to accommodate guests with special diets more efficiently than ever.

“Making sure everyone is included in the fun and has the best experience possible is extremely important to us,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We are always looking for new ways to help our crew enhance our guests’ experiences, and that’s exactly what this new program is doing on our ships for those with food allergies.”

Easily operated on touch-screen tablets at food venues across the Carnival fleet, the Menu Mate food ingredient program is powered by award-winning CertiStar software to mitigate the risks of allergic reactions. The new program is the first of its kind among major cruise lines.

"I'm a lifelong cruiser, with my first time on a Carnival cruise as a teenager, so I know firsthand how important it is to make the most of every moment with family and friends. As someone with food allergies, I don't want to waste time deliberating over what I can eat, so I'm especially excited to help share this effort with my fellow cruise lovers," said Shandee Chernow, CEO and founder of CertiStar.

The new Menu Mate food ingredient program works simply for both guests and crew. Staff will ask guests about food allergies and enter any restrictions into the program. The software will then sort through all available options and display which items are allergen friendly, which options can be modified to exclude allergens and which selections should be avoided. If preferred, guests can also use the Menu Mate designated tablet themselves to enter in their own allergy/dietary information and then order from the options curated to meet their needs.

The program eliminates the lengthy process of conferring between guests, wait staff and chefs over the ingredients of menu items and possible substitutions. Now that the process of selecting items with allergen friendly ingredients is simplified, it is also no longer necessary for guests to inform Carnival of food allergies in advance of their cruise. To hear about one guest’s recent experience ordering onboard meals with the help of a Menu Mate tablet, click here.

To ensure the program’s efficiency, Carnival culinary staff studied recipes across the line and worked to capture any potential allergen conflicts by inputting accurate ingredient information into the CertiStar software. To use the program directly and research allergen friendly options on their own, guests will be able to find a Menu Mate tablet on display near the Lido buffet stations as well.
